2018 TRIP
January 5th: We will spend about three days in and around Guayaquil. We land in Ecuador's largest city at 9:50 am on January 5th and leave our bags at the hotel while we do a city tour. Student presentation: Volcanoes and Galapagos Geology (Nick and Shannon)
January 6th: We will spend the day at Churute Mangrove National Reserve (5 mins, this is a different mangrove forest, used just as an example) and canoe around to observe the area. After that we will go on a hike to check out howler monkeys (2 mins). We will cap the day with a tour of a cacao farm and witness chocolate making (2 mins). This interesting article discusses how Ecuador became so successful in cacao production.
January 7th: Tour of the city of Guayaquil. Stakeholder meeting. Laundry day. Student presentation: Biodiversity in the Galapagos (Emily and Reshma).
January 8th: Leave for Baltra Island (Galapagos Islands) in the morning. It's a short flight, but we need to be at the airport early in order to pay the fees to enter the Galapagos Islands National Park. Reshma and Sarah are going to pay on their own.

2020 TRIP (GUAYAQUIL COMPONENT)
1/2/20 ~ Get up early, have breakfast, then check out. Get on a private shuttle for JFK at 9:30 am. Depart the US (NYC, JFK) for Guayaquil, Ecuador on (Jet Blue B61769 departs at 2pm and gets to Guayaquil at 9:04pm. . Spend the night in the Grand Hotel.
Group activities: Introduction to Ecuador and Galapagos Islands by Diego Maldonado.
Evening presentation: TBD
Meals: Dinner
1/3/20 ~ Depart Guayaquil on the earliest possible flight to the Galapagos Islands (leave hotel at 8:30 AM). Everyone is required to pay the $100 National Park Fee to enter the Galapagos Islands (bring cash). Check in at Hotel Ninfa in Puerto Ayora.
Group activities: Visit The Gemelos and El Chato, presentation about the Galapagos Islands by a professional speaker from the Charles Darwin Research Station
Evening presentation: TBD
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trip to the Galapagos Islands in between.
1/7/20 ~ Depart Puerto Ayora for Guayaquil. Check back into the Grand Hotel.
Group activities: Tour of the city and historical park, presentation about shrimp farming by a local expert. There will be time for doing laundry.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
1/8/20 ~ Check out of the Grand Hotel. We will end the day in Cuenca at the Victoria Hotel (~14,000 ft higher than Guayaquil).
Group activities: Cacao farm tour (we’ll make our own hot chocolate), boat and hiking tour of the Churute Mangroves Ecological Reserve, hiking tour of Cajas National Park.

Our host, Diego promised to cover all the topics in these readings, so be prepared to ask good questions and get clarification on issues we don't cover in class before the trip. One of the speakers in Guayaquil will discuss shrimp and tilapia farming in the areas around Churute Mangrove Forest.
